China Chef Columbia background and history

He was born in 1963 in Hubei Province, China, and attended culinary school in Deep Creek. He met his wife, Lisa, while working on a cruise ship on the Yangtze River. In 2001, Chang moved his family to the U.S., and he cooked for then-Vice President Hu Jintao after excelling at luxury hotels and national cooking competitions. Chang and Gen Lee opened Peter Chang’s China Grill in Charlottesville in 2011. After this, he opened several successful restaurants. They were named one of Bon Appétit’s 50 Best New Restaurants in 2012.

His business expanded over the years to include Williamsburg and Fredericksburg. He opened restaurants in Arlington, Md., and Rockville, Md., in 2015. He launched Q by Peter Chang in Bethesda in 2017, followed by Stamford, Connecticut, in 2018. A new Mama Chang restaurant opened in Fairfax in 2019, featuring family recipes. Chang Chang is his first restaurant in Washington, D.C., which opened in October 2022.
