Chipotle Mexican Grill background and history

It was founded by Steve Ells on July 13, 1993, in Denver, Colorado. An ice cream shop near Denver University was converted into the first restaurant. The Mission District’s taquerias inspired Ells while he worked there. In a fast-casual setting, he hoped to highlight fresh ingredients. In 2006, Chipotle had grown to over 500 locations with McDonald’s investment. As of 2017, the brand operated over 2,400 restaurants without franchising.

Chipotle faced significant challenges in 2015 because of E. coli outbreaks, which affected the company’s sales and traffic. After these incidents, strict safety measures were implemented by the company. In March 2018, Brian Niccol succeeded Steve Ellis as CEO. Chipotle continues to provide quality ingredients and unique dining experiences despite these challenges.
