Background and history of California Burrito
Originally from San Diego, the California burrito combines Mexican and American flavors. Typically, it is served with French fries, guacamole, pico de gallo, and sour cream. In Mexico, the burrito was invented as a portable meal for miners, with its name meaning “little donkey”. It is unclear where it originated. Some credit Fresh MXN or a taco shop ending in “-bertos.” During the 20th century, it became popular in California and the Southwest. California burritos are carb-heavy masterpieces topped with French fries.
California burritos do not include rice or beans, unlike Mission burritos. The Albuquerque Tribune published the first mention in 1995. San Diego’s California burrito has spread beyond its local popularity. There are burrito restaurants all over the world, including ones in Buenos Aires, Medellín, Cordoba, and Montevideo.
