Ale House background and history
A justice of the peace could license or close an ale house, requiring exemplary behavior from licensees. In 1577, there were approximately 14,000 ale houses in England. Social hubs, alehouses have been around for 10,000 years. Pubs were first built during the Roman Empire, called tabernae. For community gatherings, the Anglo-Saxons established alehouses after the Romans left. Alehouses were separated from taverns and inns during Edward VI’s reign. As Victorian pubs became more popular, alehouses declined. As a result, the Church restricted alehouses, seeking to control drinking and produce its own ale in monasteries.
