Long John Silvers background and history
Long John Silver appears in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. Popular culture portrays him as the iconic pirate. It was founded by Jim Patterson in 1969. Restaurant named after book character. Cape Cod-style architecture and nautical decor were featured in early locations. Fried fish and chips and grilled seafood are the main menu items. To reduce environmental impact, the chain emphasizes sustainable fishing practices. A&W Restaurants bought it in 2011 after it filed for bankruptcy in 1998. Many countries, including Singapore, have Long John Silver’s locations. It was Stevenson’s Treasure Island, published in 1883, which established Long John Silver as a literary icon.
