Sardis Restaurant Background and history
In Manhattan’s Theater District, Sardi’s Restaurant was founded in 1927 by Vincent Sardi Sr. and Eugenia “Jenny” Pallera. The restaurant is renowned for its extensive collection of Broadway caricatures. Sardi Sr. employed caricaturist Alex Gard to attract customers, who created over 720 original illustrations. Sardi’s has become a popular gathering place for theatergoers, hosting opening night parties and hosting Tony Awards ceremonies. With a new staff and improved reviews, the restaurant reopened after a decline in the 1980s and a temporary closure in 1990. Nearly 300 recipes are included in the cookbook Curtain Up at Sardi’s. Broadway events, including Tony Award nominations, continue to take place at Sardi’s. Richard Baratz preserves the tradition of staging theatrical luminaries through caricaturist works.
