Sonic Restaurant background and history
The Sonic Drive-In was founded by Troy Smith in Shawnee, Oklahoma in 1953. Following three failed ventures, Smith opened the Top Hat. Adding intercoms and roller skate carhops was inspired by a Louisiana food stall. Mints were sent with orders as a token of gratitude. A second Top Hat opened in 1956, but the name was copyrighted, leading to the name “Sonic.” The first Sonic Drive-In opened in 1959.
Several states had 124 locations by 1973. As Systems of America restructured in 1977, the company’s first television advertisement aired. McDonald’s unified its brand and menu under Clifford Hudson in the 1990s. Franchise sales reached $2 billion by 2001, making it a top franchise opportunity. Inspire Brands acquired it in 2018.
