Liautaud founded Jimmy John’s at the age of 19 in Charleston, Illinois. His veteran father loaned him $25,000 for his business. To reduce costs, he switched from hot dogs to sandwiches. A first menu offered four sandwiches made with hand-sliced meats and freshly baked bread. Over 2,700 stores have been opened, with 98% being franchises. Roark Capital Group acquired majority ownership of the company in 2016. Roark Capital sold Jimmy John’s to Inspire Brands in 2019. Despite undiagnosed dyslexia, Liautaud has achieved significant success and now invests in farmland.
