Background and history of Shogun Menu
Originally, shoguns fought against northern Japan’s tribal groups. The emperor ruled Japan from 1192 to 1867. As Japan became more feudal, its authority grew. This title was sometimes given to victorious generals during the Heian period. Yoritomo Minamoto founded Kamakura Bakufu in 1192 under his title. As the legal authority, the Kamakura shogunate controlled political, administrative, and judicial functions.
Ashikaga Takauji founded the Ashikaga shogunate in 1338 after the Kamakura shogunate fell in 1333. Daimyo power weakened the Ashikaga clan over time. Japan’s Tokugawa Shogunate became the most stable in its history in 1603, under Tokugawa Ieyasu. Emperor Tokugawa Yoshinobu ended the Tokugawa shogunate in 1867, giving the emperor power.
