Description

This Devil’s Food Nutella Cake is a decadent treat with moist chocolate layers and luscious Nutella frosting. Perfect for special occasions, it combines deep cocoa richness with creamy hazelnut-chocolate sweetness for an irresistible show-stopping dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake:

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-process preferred)

  • 2 cups granulated sugar

  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder

  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 2 large eggs, room temperature

  • 1 cup whole milk

  • ½ cup vegetable oil

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 1 cup boiling water

For the Nutella Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 ½ cups Nutella spread

  • 3 cups powdered sugar

  • ¼ cup heavy cream (add more if needed for consistency)

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

1. Preheat the Oven:
Preheat to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.

2. Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a large bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

3. Mix Wet Ingredients:
In another bowl, whisk eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Gradually combine wet with dry ingredients.

4. Add Boiling Water:
Carefully stir in boiling water (batter will be thin). Divide evenly into prepared pans.

5. Bake:
Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks.

6. Make the Frosting:
Beat butter and Nutella until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, cream, vanilla, and salt until fluffy. Adjust cream for spreadable consistency.

7. Assemble the Cake:
Place one cake layer on a plate, spread with frosting. Top with second layer and frost the entire cake. Garnish with chocolate shavings, hazelnuts, or extra Nutella drizzle if desired.

Notes

Make Ahead: Bake cake layers a day in advance and wrap in plastic. Store at room temperature or refrigerate.

Flavor Boost: Add 1 tablespoon of espresso powder to enhance the chocolate flavor.

Serving Suggestions: Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or fresh berries for balance.

Storage Tips: Store covered at room temperature for 2 days or refrigerate up to 5 days. Freeze unfrosted layers for up to 2 months.
