Description

This Asian BBQ Chicken is marinated in a bold, tangy-sweet sauce with soy, garlic, and ginger, then grilled or baked to perfection. A flavorful twist on classic barbecue chicken, it’s perfect for family dinners or backyard cookouts.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Marinade/Sauce:

  • ½ cup soy sauce

  • ¼ cup hoisin sauce

  • ¼ cup honey (or brown sugar)

  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated

  • 2 tablespoons ketchup (for BBQ depth)

  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes or sriracha (optional, for heat)

For the Chicken:

  • 2 pounds chicken thighs or drumsticks (bone-in or boneless)

  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (for garnish)

  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)

Instructions

1. Make the Marinade:
In a bowl, whisk soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, ketchup, and chili flakes until smooth.

2. Marinate the Chicken:
Place chicken in a large resealable bag or dish. Pour marinade over, coat well, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (overnight for best flavor).

3. Grill or Bake:

  • Grill Method: Preheat grill to medium-high. Cook chicken for 6–7 minutes per side, basting with extra marinade until cooked through (internal temp 165°F / 74°C).

  • Bake Method: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange chicken on a lined baking sheet and bake for 25–30 minutes, basting halfway through.

4. Garnish and Serve:
Sprinkle with sesame seeds and green onions. Serve hot with rice, noodles, or grilled veggies.

Notes

Make Ahead: Marinate chicken up to 24 hours in advance for maximum flavor.

Flavor Variations: Add a splash of pineapple juice for tropical sweetness or swap hoisin with oyster sauce for a deeper flavor.

Serving Suggestions: Pair with steamed jasmine rice, stir-fried vegetables, or wrap in lettuce leaves for a lighter option.

Storage Tips: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or skillet for best texture.
