As an alternative hip hop trio, The Black Eyed Pea Castle Rock was formed in 1995 by will.i.am, apl.de.ap, and Taboo. In 1998, they released Behind the Front, followed by Bridging the Gap (2000). In 2002, Fergie’s addition led to mainstream success. A pop-rap style was evident on their third recording, Elephunk (2003). Several Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles were released by the group’s album ‘The E.N.D.’ (2009). Super Bowl XLV halftime show in 2011 made them known for their high-energy performances.
In 2015, they briefly reunited, but Fergie left in 2018. After she left, they recruited first member Rey Soul. ‘Translation’ (2020) and ‘Elevation’ (2022) are recent albums with reggae and Latin influences. They rank among the best-selling musical acts of all time with over 80 million records sold.
